Throughout this seder, we will say the Kiddush four times. Because we are in a North American Winter, we will enjoy seasonal beverages this evening, saying our blessings over mulled wine and cider. Because this is a special night, we will acknowledge four particular points of gratitude for this season.

For our first toast, we raise a glass to the base of the holiday: They tried to kill us, we won, let's eat. Chanukah at its core is one of many holidays in which we celebrate the triumph of the spirit of the Jewish people, our commitment to Judaism in the midst of oppression and hostility, and the survival of our community against all odds.

Blessed are You, Adonai Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine (tree).
